Aug. 26, 1915 - Feb. 7, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Alberta McGlaun-Stokes was born on August 26, 1915, in Lafayette Springs, Mississippi, to Dock and Lula McGlaun. On Friday, February 7, 2014, the Lord called her from labor to reward. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at a very young age at the Clear Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Lafayette Springs, Mississippi. Alberta McGlaun married Charlie I. Stokes on February 7, 1942. The family moved to Detroit, Michigan, in 1948 and later to South Bend, Indiana, where she remained until the Lord took her home. In 1968 Mrs. Stokes completed her High School Diploma. She believed education was very important and had never lost her desire to learn. She was a housewife and caregiver for her husband and children. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. F.D. Johnson and later moved her membership to Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Billy W. Kirk (and current Pastor, Rev. André A. McGhee). She loved to spend time socializing with her friends at King Center and LaSalle Center, making gifts to share with family and friends. Crocheting was a favorite pastime. Alberta Stokes is survived by her 9 children: Arthur Eugene (Carol) Stokes of Bloomington, Indiana, Charlene Stokes of Southfield, Michigan, Edward Stokes of South Bend, Indiana, Ruth Harris of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jimmie (Dorothy) Stokes of Bellville, Michigan, Robert Stokes, caregiver Shirley Henry (Robert Wilson Jr.), Wilbert Stokes, all of South Bend, Indiana, and Gwen Stokes of Redford, Michigan. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: Edward (Carrie) McGlaun of Southfield, Michigan, and Robert (Girlie) McGlaun of Belleville, Michigan; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by her parents, Lula and Dock McGlaun; her husband, Charlie I. Stokes; siblings: Quinton, Ada Mae, Haywood, Hubert, Willie, Lonnie Mae, and Prentis; one son-in-law, James Henry; grandsons: Andre Guyton, Jermel and Jonathan Stokes; great-grandchildren: Shawn Poindexter Jr. and Jada Hannah. Services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014, in Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend. Visitation at 10:00 a.m. and funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Private burial will take place on Monday, February 17, 2014, at Highland Cemetery.
