SOUTH BEND - Ernest Szasz, 93, residing at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's, passed away at 8:44 am Sunday, February 9, 2014, in his home. He was born April 20, 1920, in Szombathely, Hungary, the only child of Ernest and Elizabeth Szasz. His father was a newspaper publisher and editor. Ernest studied law and journalism and was slated to take over the family business. Unfortunately, WW II intervened, the printing plant was bombed and destroyed, and Ernest was drafted as a war correspondent. Hungary fell and dark days of Soviet occupation followed. Ernest became involved in opposition politics, eventually publishing and editing a daily newspaper. He was arrested and jailed without formal charges 15 times for his editorials, until he was forced to flee the country with his wife, Veronica, in 1948. They spent two years in Austria before emigrating to the United States in 1950. They arrived in South Bend where they would spend the rest of their lives. Veronica preceded Ernest in death in 1996. He later married Maria Micskey, who survives. In addition to his wife, Maria, Ernest is survived by sons, Nicholas J. (Peggy) Szazs of Lansing, MI, and Leslie J. (Cynthia) Szasz of Columbus, OH; stepsons, Stephen P. (Iretta) Micskey of Savu Savu, Figi and Nicholas (Jane) Micskey of Seattle, WA; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest Szasz Jr. After moving to South Bend, Ernest was employed by Studebaker, Oliver, Drewry's, ARMCO and CBS-Gemeinhardt, from which he retired as a managing supervisor in 1985. As a sideline, he was an accredited correspondent and columnist for Hungarian language newspapers in Cleveland, New York and Los Angeles. His love of America was reflected in his writings. Ernest was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend, and a charter member and secretary/treasurer of DALU 275, AFL-CIO. Memorial services for Ernest will be held at noon on Thursday, February 13, 2014, in the chapel at Sanctuary at St. Paul's, 3602 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, IN 46614, with Rev. Herb Yost, CSC, officiating. Palmer Funeral Home - River Park Chapel, and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
