SOUTH BEND - Dorothy McMillan, 84, of South Bend, IN passed away at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Signature Health Care, South Bend. Dorothy McMillan was born in Bertrand, Mich. on May 24, 1929 and spent her early years in Buchanan, Mich. She was the daughter of Nellie Lawson Six and Benjamin Harrison Six. Known as Dottie to her friends, she was the youngest of three siblings. The family moved to South Bend when she was 13 years old where she lived for the rest of her life. Her two brothers, Robert E. Six, and Wayne Six, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Salli (James) McMillan Hutton, two granddaughters, Jonica Weiler Standridge and Laura (Tim) Murray, and seven great grandchildren, Jordan and William Standridge, Grace, Jack, Maggie, Emma, and Charlotte Murray, and her loving companion, Sully Springer. She was an active member of Stull United Methodist Church, and later at Faith United Methodist Church. Her friends were many and she had a great love of music, jazz, in particular, traveling to Chicago and the surrounding area in her younger days to hear Dinah Washington, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and other great musicians of the day. In her later years, she traveled to New Orleans with friends to soak up the sounds of the city. She worked in the trucking industry all of her life retiring from Alvan Motor Freight, LLC. Dottie was generous to a fault and never knew a stranger. She felt strongly that the world is one country and the citizenship is mankind, a philosophy she not only believed in, but lived, throughout her life.
