NILES - Dessie Pearl Chappel, age 90 years of Niles, Michigan, died on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at her home following a brief illness. She was born January 28, 1924, in Bedford, Indiana, to William Clone & Viola May (Walls) East. On January 16, 1960, in Bangor, Michigan, Dessie married Russell Chappel, who survives. Dessie was an avid bowler in the Chippewa Bowling senior league division named "The Golden Gang" for the "Happy-Go-Lucky" team. She also enjoyed genealogy. Dessie is survived by her husband Russell of Niles; children, Steven (& Margie) Chappel of Watervliet, Michigan, Kenneth (& Ruth Thornton) Chappel of Coloma, Michigan, Patricia (& Michael) Herman of Niles; 3 grandsons, Russell Chappel, David Chappel, Thomas Herman; 2 granddaughters, Jennifer Dinges and Stephanie Stacey; and 6 great-grandchildren. Dessie is also survived by a brother, Dossie East of Warren, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her son, Paul Chappel; sister, Edna Smith; brother, Edward East, and infant brother, William Thomas East. Funeral services for Dessie Pearl Chappel will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014, at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles, with Rev. Randy Pearman of Bethel Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be at Keeler Cemetery, Keeler, Michigan. The family will receive relatives and friends from noon until the time of services on Friday at the funeral home. Donations in memory of Dessie may be made to Hospice at Home.
