June B. Locke June 16, 1924 - April 11, 2014 SOUTH BEND - After spending a short time in a nursing facility, the Lord summoned June Brown Locke, 89, to her eternal home. June spent the past three years battling Alzheimer's disease until her burden was lifted on Friday, April 11, 2014 at approximately 8:15 am. June was the second child, born June 16, 1924, to Elwood and Ida (Dorsey) Brown in Frankfort, Kentucky. She was educated in Frankfort at Rosenwald Model School and the former Mayo-Underwood High School. It was reported that June ranked first in her senior class, was senior class president and student council vice president. June then attended Kentucky State College (1950) where she received a degree in Business and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Following the completion of her undergraduate degree from Kentucky State, June began her professional career in Maryland where she worked for a short time at the former Maryland State College. In 1952, while in Maryland, June met and married William "Corky" Hale Locke. After being drafted into the Armed Forces, Corky and June moved to Oklahoma while Corky trained for war. June then moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1955 and sought employment at a trucking company until she began her teaching career. June passionately taught Special Education students at Kaley, Kennedy, Darden, and Greene elementary schools. While teaching, June attended St. Mary's College, where she completed her Master's degree in Education (1969), and served as a delegate in the National Education Association. She retired in 1989. June is survived by four children: Yvette I. Locke of Milwaukee, WI, Sonya L. (Elliot) Hopkins of Indianapolis, IN, Geary L. Locke (Mary) and Stacey L. Locke, both of South Bend, IN; seven grandchildren: Tanae, Geary Jr., Jennifer, Ashley, Tyler, Tamarra, and Evan; three sisters: Joyce E. Stith of South Bend, Maxine C. Hannibal of Atlanta, GA, and Ida Marie Woodard of Hopkinsville, KY; sisters-in-law, Clara T. Brown of Ypsilanti, MI and Mary Jane Brown of Lexington, KY; brother-in-law, Henry P. Kemp of Prairie View, TX, along with a score of nieces and nephews. June was preceded in death by both parents, Elwood and Ida (Dorsey) Brown; husband, William H. Locke; sons: James E. Locke of St. Anne, MD and William H. Locke Jr. of South Bend; brothers: Elwood D. Brown of Ypsilanti, MI, James E. Brown of Los Angeles, CA, and Charles W. Brown of Lexington, KY; a sister, Mary B. Kemp of Prairie View, TX; and brothers-in-law: John C. Stith of South Bend and William H. Hannibal of Milwaukee, WI. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2014, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014, in Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 116 N. Birdsell St., South Bend.
