Lois Esther King Aug. 28, 1926 - May 9, 2014 SARASOTA, FL - Lois Esther King, 87, of Sarasota, Florida, went to her heavenly home on May 9th, 2014. She was born on August 28th, 1926, in Dunlap, Indiana, to Calvin and Myrtle Smeltzer. She married Howard LeRoy King in July 1946, and they remained happily married until his death on July 23, 2001. Together they raised three children. Lois was the high school librarian for Baugo Community School Corporation in Elkhart, Indiana, and was active in Delta Kappa Gamma. She earned a B.A. from Goshen College and a M.L.S. from Easter Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She loved reading and sharing literature of all kinds. She continued performing library work well into retirement and was serving as librarian for Sunnyside Village Retirement Community, where she lived, and St. James United Methodist Church, where she attended and led Bible studies, until March of this year. Lois' love of nature was always apparent. She possessed extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna in her native Indiana and Florida. She especially loved the beauty of birds and flowering plants. She and Howard volunteered extensively at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, FL where she gave guided tours of the gardens. Prior to his passing, Howard and Lois travelled extensively and enjoyed many Elder Hostel experiences in the US and Europe. They also volunteered in numerous work camps in the US as well as in Africa. She is survived by her children, Helen King of Granger, IN, and John (Mary) King of Sharpsville, IN, two grandsons, Robert King of Sharpsville, IN and Patrick King of Indianapolis, IN. Also surviving are three brothers and a sister: Walter (Doris) Smeltzer of Peoria, IL; Carl (Margaret) Smeltzer of Harrisburg, VA; and Sam Smeltzer of Elkhart, IN; and a sister, Mabel Steiner of Goshen, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, and son, Robert. She was also preceded in death by two stepbrothers: Loyal Smeltzer of Tuscon, AZ, and Clyde Smeltzer of Elkhart, IN. Friends may call from 9 to 11 AM on Friday, May 16 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Elkhart. The funeral will follow at 11 AM, followed by burial at Olive Cemetery in Elkhart.
