William Edward Charleston Jan. 30, 1947 - June 11, 2014 SOUTH BEND - William "Ed"ward Charleston, 67, of South Bend, passed away on Wednesday, June 11th, after battling mesothelioma and complications from surgery. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; son, Chad (Kim); daughter, Kathryn Brewer (Jason); daughter, Kristina; grandchildren, Keeghan, Devin, Ellissa Brewer and Olivia Charleston; sister, Vesta Ferguson; and brother, Maurice Bacon. He was greeted in Heaven by his parents, Arch and Cora, & two sisters, Lavina and Joy. He was a Vietnam veteran with a Purple Heart for his service in the Marines. He was honorably discharged in 1967. He then met the love of his life and got married on July 13, 1968. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1972, Ed went on to become an executive in the transportation industry in Fort Wayne & Elkhart, Indiana, and Anaheim & Brea, California. He finally went on to work at his favorite job: the Assistant Sacristan at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Notre Dame. Ed was very passionate about his faith, family and friends. He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish in South Bend, where he was involved in many parish activities including serving as a sacristan and Eucharistic minister. Visitation (4-8 pm) & a Rosary service (7 pm) will be held on Wednesday, June 18th, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home at 3545 N Bendix Drive, South Bend. The funeral Mass will take place at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Notre Dame on Thursday, June 19th, at 9:30 am (with visitation beginning at 8:30 am) with a military burial at St Joseph Valley Memorial Park Cemetery and a reception to follow at St. Anthony's Parish on Jefferson Blvd.
