Herschel Franklin Collier Mar. 28, 1926 - July 8, 2014 NILES - Mr. Herschel Franklin Collier, 88, of Niles, Michigan succumbed to cancer at his home surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. He was born March 28, 1926 to Lottie and William Austin Collier in Liberty, Indiana. Herschel, affectionately known as "Uncle Frank", attended high school in Liberty, Indiana and was drafted in the United States Army where he was honorably discharged in 1947. He retired from Dodge Manufacturing Company in Mishawaka, Indiana in 1982 employed as machine repairman. He loved praying and reading his Bible. Also, he enjoyed camping, fishing, carpentry work, barbecuing and making his special barbecue sauce. Herschel leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Vernon (Janice) Collier; daughters, Deborah (Samuel) Diggins of South Bend, Indiana and Donna (Robin) Fisher of Niles, Michigan; a sister, Margie (John) Webb of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; and brothers, George (Ruth) Collier of Mexico, New York and Harold Collier of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Brenda Herd Williams; brothers-in-law, Donald and Samuel Herd; a very special friend and care-giver, Cassandra Boney and her son, Jason and grandson, Richard; grandchildren, Casey Collier, Corey (Abraham) Oluwole, Samuel III, Kheanan, Domonique, Khamron, Khalin Diggins and Bryon (Shanisse) Fisher, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lottie and William Austin; wife, Oneida; sister, Bernice Wilson; and brothers, Lawrence, Archie, Sterling, Stanley and Darnell. The family extends a special thank you to Miss Pat and to the Helping Hands of Hospice for their care and support. Funeral services for Mr. Herschel Collier will be held at Greater St. Matthews Church, 2705 Marquette Boulevard, South Bend, Indiana at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, July 14, 2014. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
