James Louis Knight March 20, 1923 - July 8, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Mr. James Louis Knight, age 91, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at West Bend Nursing Rehabilitation Center. James was born March 20, 1923, in Savannah, GA, to Frank and Frances (Jinks) Knight. He was honorably discharged on December 27, 1945, from the United States Army after faithfully serving his country two years. Coming from Savannah, GA, in 1951, he moved to South Bend, IN. He married Delores Phillips on February 5, 1959, in South Bend. He worked at AM General as a laborer for 15 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and a VFW Post 9733 member. His passions were making barbecue grills and house and yard items out of steel. He was a mechanic, photographer, and a lover of boxing. James was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Knight; his parents, Frank and Frances Knight; a daughter, Robbie Knight; a son, James Johnson; and two grandchildren, Leon Knight and Elena Johnson. Survivors left to cherish his memory include one daughter, Frances Knight; five sons, Curtis (Peggy) Johnson, Frederick Johnson, Dennis Knight and Frank (Jessica) Knight, all of South Bend, IN, and Winston Johnson of Grand Rapids, MI; eight grandchildren, Atlantis, Alise, Charlene, Valerie, Victoria, Christopher, Robert and Ashley; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leon Knight of Daytona Beach, FL; and special friends, Pat Polk and Oscar Moody; along with a host of other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, with burial following at Riverview Cemetery.
