Mikelene M. Velez May 18, 1958 - July 31, 2014 EDWARDSBURG - Mikelene M. Velez, 56, passed away peacefully in her home July 31, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her loving husband was by her side and she left this world with a smile on her face. She was born May 18, 1958 in South Bend and graduated from LaSalle High School in 1976. Her father, Harry Edward Manijak preceded her in death, along with a granddaughter, Jalynn Kennedy Velez. On August 4, 1979, she married the love of her life, Nathan Velez. He survives along with their three children, Brian (Jamie) Velez of Granger, Christopher Velez of Edwardsburg, and Andrea (Craig) Spradlin of Niles; her mom, Mary (Taberski) Manijak of South Bend; a sister, Sandra (Mike) Stansfield of Edwardsburg and her brother, Michael Manijak of South Bend; two grandchildren, Aubrey Phillips and Nolan Spradlin; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mikelene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a gentle and sweet spirit, and found great joy in seeing others happy. She was a social butterfly who never met a stranger and a heart warming laugh that everyone recognized. She was a Peanuts/Charlie Brown fanatic, loved her dogs, and was an active member at Niles Church of Christ, Niles, MI. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, and also by her Granger Martin's family, where she worked for over 15 years. The family would like to thank her friends for all their help, who faithfully visited and gave so much love and support and also all the nurses on 10th floor oncology at Memorial Hospital, especially Linda. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 11AM to 1PM, with a service at 1PM, at the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd.
