SOUTH BEND - Helen Mardell Lewis, age 80, of South Bend, IN, was called home to her heavenly father at 3:30 a.m., on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Cardinal Nursing Home, after fighting a long time illness. Helen was born February 17, 1933 to Lindsey Doc and Jessie Glendora (King) Richardson in South Bend. She attended the South Bend Community School Corporation System. She was a professional caterer at the Summit Club until 1977, when she moved to East St. Louis, IL. Before Helen moved to East St. Louis, she was a faithful member of the VFW Post 9733. She enjoyed cooking and was an avid collector of salt and pepper shakers. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Helen was a loving wife to Ferry Lewis, devoted mother, aunt and grandmother. She is survived by four daughters, Terri, DeLena and Kewana Lewis, and Tamara Brown, all of South Bend; two sons, Garfield Hamilton of Seattle, WA and John Gregory (Kecia) Lewis of Washington, DC; and a beloved granddaughter whom she raised, Zenda Edwards of East St. Louis, IL, along with 14 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren & 10 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Family members who preceded her in death are her husband, Ferry Lewis, one daughter, Glendora "Polly" Doxie, two sons, Walter Teague and Timothy Brown, and two brothers, Leonard and Charles Richardson. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 2013 at New Horizons Outreach Church, with burial following at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
