SOUTH BEND - Hugh T. Day Sr., 93, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 2:37 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013, in his home. Hugh was born on September 20, 1920, in Keyport, New Jersey, to James H. and Catherine (Massey) Day. He retired from Asarco, Inc., in 1983 after 43 1/2 years of service. On June 7, 1947, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Keyport, New Jersey, he married Gertrude T. Stein, who preceded him in death on March 1, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Day; his sister, Alice Ralph; and his brother, James C. Day. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (David) DeReamer of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Kathleen (John) Cain of Soddy Daisy, Tennesse; one son, Hugh T. (Deborah) Day Jr. of Lowell, Indiana; thirteen grandchildren, Tamara (Kenneth) DeReamer-Stout of Seymour, Indiana, Amy DeReamer-Allen of Greensburg, Indiana, Kimberly DeReamer of Beaufort, South Carolina, David (April) DeReamer of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Kelly (Timothy) DeReamer-Paxton of Bluffton, South Carolina, John (Jennifer) Cain III of Palmer, Alaska, Erin (AJ) Cain-Poe of Monterey, California, Daniel Cain of Hisxon, Tennesee, Matthew Cain of El Paso, Texas, Ryan (Andrea) Day of Lowell, Indiana, Nicholas Day of Cedar Lake, Indiana, Zachary (Amy) Day of Flossmoor, Illinois, and Ashleigh Day of Lowell, Indiana; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 Monday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Rosary will be prayed at 2 p.m. Hugh was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame, Indiana. He had been a tour guide at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart for 15 years. Hugh was a W.W. II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion and D.A.V.
