SOUTH BEND - Richard A. Kenney, 79, of South Bend, died Thursday evening in his home. He was born March 1, 1934, in West Haverstraw, New York, to the late William E. "Winn" and Anne (Shanahan) Kenney. On June 11, 1960, in Mooresville, IN, he married the former Kay Comer, who survives along with his children: Melissa Kenney of South Bend, Melanie Chaney (Stuart) of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Richard Allen Kenney Jr. of Deltona, FL; and a grandchild, Zachary Allen Kenney. Also surviving are his siblings, Karen Tostevin of Rochester, IN, Jane Rakes of Roanoke, VA, and Matthew Kenney of Knox, IN. Preceding him in death were sisters, Diane Dodici, Barbara Arnold and Jacqueline Pearson; and brother, William Kenney. Mr. Kenney retired as plant maintenance Engineer at St. Mary's College in 2000 after thirteen years of service, and also sold real estate for Cressy and Everett for seven years. Richard graduated from Haverstraw High School New York, after which he joined the United States Navy during the Korean War and served on a Navy Icebreaker. After discharge from the Navy he furthered his education at Westchester Community College in New York and received an associate degree in Electrical Technology and went on to a degree at Indiana Tech, Fort Wayne, in Electrical Engineering. Richard was a member of the Kiwanis Club, South Bend, Elks #235, and the American Legion. He and Kay enjoyed visiting with friends and family in their travels and loved to golf. He was known as "Mr. Fix It" to many people and enjoyed manicuring his yard in past years. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd., with Military Honors following. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, December 2, 2013, from 4:00 to 7.00 p.m. in the funeral home. Cremation will follow services at Welsheimer Crematory.
