DAVID BRUCE HURLEY, 70, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, formerly of Williamson, W.Va., passed away on May 23, 2018, at his residence. David was born on October 9, 1947, in Williamson, W.Va., the son of the late Darrell E. Hurley and Norma Obera Fannin Hurley. He was also preceded in death by his uncles, who were like fathers to him, Cleve, Elmer, Earnest and Carl Fannin and Yurel Hurley; his aunts, Estelle Fannin Miller, Cynthia Fannin Dobbs, Ruby Jean Davis, Nolaine Loftis Ferrell; and by Peirce Whitt, his best friend. David was an amazing athlete, holding the starting quarterback position at Belfry High School his freshman and sophomore years. He then transferred to Williamson High School and started at quarterback his junior and senior years. His athletic achievement at Williamson would later earn him a place in the Williamson Wolfpack Athletic Hall of Fame. After high school David received a scholarship to play football at Concord College, where he played until being drafted into the United States Marine Corps. David proudly served our country in the Vietnam War, receiving two Purple Hearts and a myriad other medals. After serving our country, he returned home, married and became a father. He then spent time coaching football for Varney Grade School. David was saved and baptized at the First Baptist Church of Belfry, Ky., where he remains a member. David worked as the owner and operator of Value Tax in Williamson, W.Va., until his retirement. Survivors include his daughter and only child, Kendra B. Hurley-Campbell of Huddy, Ky.; his brother, Larry E. Hurley of Charleston, W.Va.; his aunt, Naomi Fannin of Catlettsburg, Ky.; his nephews, Jarred (Dinah) Hurley of Charleston, W.Va., and Mark Everett Smith of Huntington, W.Va.; his great-niece, Amanda Hurley; his great-nephew, Nathan Hurley; and a host of loving family members and friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018, from noon until 1:30 p.m., at which time Bob Norman will conduct a memorial service. Belfry Chapter #141 will conduct military services at the funeral home. Following the memorial service, a luncheon for family and friends will be held at the First Baptist Church of Belfry fellowship hall. Later that evening at 6 p.m., a celebration of David's life will take place at Starters Bar and Grill in Williamson, W.Va. R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Ky., is serving the family.
