ELSIE JANE LONG, daughter of the late Levi and Mae Dingess Smith, was born November 28, 1937, in Logan, West Virginia. She attended the public school system of Logan County and was a graduate of Marshall University, earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Ms. Long touched countless lives as an educator with both the Logan County Educational system and Chapmanville Junior High School where she taught English Literature until her retirement. She was a creative writer with a passion for poetry. Ms. Long was loved by many who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Mae Smith, and her grandson, Brennan Patrick Curtis. She quietly departed this life on Saturday, July 21, 2018, in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington, W.Va., surrounded by loving hearts and hands. She will be forever remembered and cherished in the lives of her children, Chris Curtis of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., Catherine "Cathy" Curtis of Huntington, W.Va., and Cynthia "Cindy" and Mark Horney of Garner, N.C.; grandchildren, Trey Curtis of Arlington, Va., Taylor Curtis of Indianapolis, Ind., Collier Curtis of Bruceton Mills, W.Va.; step-grandchildren, Griffin and Maria Horney of Garner, N.C.; brother, Martin Smith, and sister-in-law, Nancy Smith, of Gainesville, Fla.; brother, Fredrick Smith of Greensboro, Md.; nephews, Erik Smith, Scot Smith, Brit Smith and Levi Smith; and a host of loving friends. In lieu of flowers, the family of Ms. Long requests donations be made to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington in her name. Graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2018, at Spring Hill Cemetery with Pastor Jerome Whitfield officiating. A Celebration of her life will be held at the Underwood Senior Center, 630 9th Ave., immediately following the graveside service. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, is assisting the family.
