Lula Sponaugle Slone

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — Lula "Peggy" Sponaugle Slone, 81, of Ormond Beach, Fla., formerly of Accoville, departed this life Sat., Jan. 25, 2014, at home surrounded by family after a long illness.

Born Nov. 20, 1932, at Hamlin, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Wilson Sponaugle and Willa Lucinda Lucas Sponaugle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Clarence Slone; her beloved son, Michael Eugene Slone; two brothers, Earl Sponaugle and George Sponaugle, and her sister Phyllis Sponaugle Davis.

Lula was a graduate of Marshall University, obtaining her Undergraduate Degree in Education in 1970 and her Master's Degree in Education Administration in 1973. She worked for the Logan County Board of Education in West Virginia as a teacher for over 22 years retiring in 1989. She then worked for the Volusia County Board of Education in Florida for a further 15 years. She was a Daughter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 60 at Logan. Lula loved antiques, especially antique jewelry. She could be seen every day of the week wearing one or more of the countless number of antique necklaces she collected during her lifetime. She also enjoyed walking on the beach every afternoon and talking to the many friends and neighbors she met during her walks.

Survivors include her sister, Muriel Templeton of Dunkirk, Ind.; five children, Gerald Clarence Slone II of Robinette, Paul Douglas Slone and Jon Sponaugle Slone, both of Ormond Beach, Cherry Lee Rogers of Amherstdale, and Timothy Mark Slone of Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jill Marie Rogers of Daytona Beach, Fla., Beth Ann Rogers of Chicago, Ill., and Tiffany Michelle Slone and Brandon Gregory Slone, both of Davin, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held for Lula at 1 p.m. Sat., April 12, in the mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.
