Charles Frederick Charlie Chuck Large passed away peacefully Nov. 2, 2013, at age 89. Born in Cambridge, he enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to a blimp squadron and subsequently served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga. He was aboard the ship when it was attacked and heavily damaged by two Japanese kamikaze planes, and was instrumental in making the emergency repairs which kept the ship afloat. He remained in contact with his Big T comrades until his death. He married Evelyn Metzger in 1945, and they remained happily married for 53 years until Evelyns death in 1998. They had three children, Kenneth, Kathleen, and Ronald. They moved to Stoughton in 1951, where Charlie immediately became involved in his community as a town meeting representative. His voice was often heard loud and strong at town meetings. He joined the Stoughton Fire Department in 1962, and retired in 1980 as a lieutenant. He earned an Associate of Science Degree in Fire Science from Massasoit Community College in 1975 while serving his tenure at the fire department. Charlie was a member of the VFW Post 1645, American Legion Post 89, Amvets Post 1977, Seabees Island X-4, and the Allied Veterans Council, all in Stoughton. He spearheaded the development of Faxon Veterans Memorial Park and raised the funds to construct a gazebo there at no cost to the town. The gazebo was later dedicated in his name on Memorial Day 2008 as the Charles F. Large Gazebo. He served as the Veterans Graves Officer in Stoughton for over 12 years and was responsible for placing American flags at the grave of every town veteran. He helped organize the Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veterans Day observances in Stoughton each year. He also participated annually in the Memorial Day Roll Call, reciting the names of every Stoughton veteran killed in the line of duty, and recited the Gettysburg Address each year on Veterans Day. He was honored to receive numerous awards, citations, and letters of commendation throughout his life, all of which were well earned. Charlie had many interests and hobbies. He was a lifetime member of the Little Theatre of Stoughton and acted onstage many times. He was also an accomplished poet and writer, and was regularly invited to speak in schools about his World War II experiences. A loyal and dedicated family man, Charlie is survived by his brother, Thomas C. Large; his son, Kenneth, and daughter-in-law, Linda; and his son, Ronald, and daughter-in-law, Anne Marie. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and their families, Jeffrey Meier and his partner Eric Eddy, Jamie Meier and his wife Ami, Troy Large and Jessica Caswell, Scott Large and his fiancee Maren Roddy, Charles Robert Large and his wife Sharon, Victoria Large, and Kristin Scherrer. He also has three great-grandchildren, Laila Meier, Jalen Meier, and Charles William Large.
