Millard H. Allen

Millard H. Allen, 96 years old, went home to be with the Lord June 9, 2014. Millard was married to Gladys (DeMont) Allen for 65 years before she passed away June 7, 2011. Millard was a sergeant in an Army Field Hospital Unit assigned to support Marine units as they took Iwo Jima, Saipan, and other Islands in the Pacific during World War ll. He was awarded a Bronze Star for protecting patients while the field hospital was under heavy enemy fire. Millard met, and married Gladys DeMont in Brockton when the war ended and they were married Nov. 18, 1945. Everyone who knew Millard marveled at the long hours he worked to support a family of five children and to provide them the opportunities he never had. He loved boating, fishing, bowling, and woodworking. Millard and Gladys cared for their late son, Robert, at home for 36 years after he was disabled in Vietnam, until his death in 2006. Millard is survived by his children, Betsy Allen of Concord, N.H., Herbert Allen and his wife Marie of Sandwich, Patricia Quimby and her husband Frank of Raynham and James Allen of Freetown. A private family funeral service will be held in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave. (Rte. 138 South), Friday, June 13, at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Cedar Knoll Cemetery, East Taunton.
