Vincent J. Mazgelis

Vincent J. Mazgelis, 93, a lifelong resident of Brockton, died Sept. 18, 2013. A 1938 graduate of Brockton High School, he went on to earn both an undergraduate and masters degree from Boston College. He served in both the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he served as a deep sea diver and mine disposal expert. Vincent was a teacher at North Easton and Brockton public schools for 37 years, retiring in 1987. He was a longtime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Navy and Marine Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association and the Holy Name Society. He was a daily Mass lector at St. Edith Stein Church. His hobbies consisted of kitchen gardening, surfcasting and reading. Vincent was the beloved husband of Elaine M. (Kamandulis) Mazgelis for 59 years; loving father of Mary Iselin of Marlborough, N.H., Clement Mazgelis of Bolton, Conn., Christopher Mazgelis of Marstons Mills and Elaine Margaret Mazgelis of Melrose; grandfather of 9, great-grandfather of 1; brother of Sr. M. Clement and Sr. Margaret Mary of Chicago, John Mazgelis of Litchfield, N.H., and the late Clement who was killed in World War II; and an uncle of many nieces and nephews. All are welcome to calling hours Monday, Sept. 23, from 5-8 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Chapel at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St., Brockton. Funeral from Waitt Funeral Home Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 8 a.m., funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Edith Stein Church and burial at Calvary Cemetery.
