Edward T. Fitzgibbons, 87, of Yarmouthport, completed the circle of life on Friday, Aug. 30 at Kindred Transitional Care at Eagle Pond in Dennis.
He was born in Holyoke, MA, the son of the late Patrick and Nellie Fitzgibbons. He entered the Army and served in the Philippines during World War II. Upon his return from the service, he graduated from Suffield Academy in Connecticut and then earned a degree in Physical Education from Ithaca College in New York.
Edward married his wife, Dorothy (Larson) in 1954 and they made their home in Whitman, MA for many years before retiring to the Cape. He was a teacher and coach in the Brockton school system for 36 years, where he touched many lives, especially those of the young people he taught and mentored. He was inducted into the Brockton Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his work with and service to young athletes. It was his most cherished honor. He is fondly remembered for his easygoing way, his warmth and his sense of humor. Ed and Dot were planning to celebrate their 60 years of marriage in January.
In addition to his wife, Edward is survived by his three daughters: Susan Nelson and her husband Doug of So. Dennis; Donna Woods and her husband Gary of Kittery Point, ME; and Jane Hanrahan and her husband Joseph of Thompson, CT. He will be missed by his grandchildren Janet Brown, Emily Carter, David Conant, Elizabeth, Michael and Allie Woods, Jack, Mary Beth, Billy and Michael Hanrahan, and his great-grandson Wyatt Carter. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Shea of Holyoke, MA, and was predeceased by his brothers Patrick, William and Raymond Fitzgibbons.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 4 - 8 p.m., in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Funeral will form on Wednesday, at 9:30 a.m., in the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., in St. Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Burial will be held in Chandler Gray Cemetery, Chandler Gray Rd, West Yarmouth.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, 255 Independence Dr., Barnstable, MA 02630.
