David L. Gates Obituary
David L. Gates, 72, of Rochester, former longtime resident of Middleboro, died on Thursday, August 7, 2014. He was the husband of Joanne B. (Baldwin) Gates; they had been married for 51 years. He was born in Middleboro, son of the late Harold C. and Ellen G. (McCarthy) Gates. He attended Middleboro schools. David was a third generation cranberry grower, having owned and operated Gates Cranberry. He was one of the original members of the East Middleboro 4-H, and was in charge of the chicken barbeque at the Annual 4-H Fair for several years. He was a member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau and the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association. Survivors include his wife, Joanne B.; two sons, Shane J. and his wife Marianne Gates, and Barry E. and his wife Mari Gates; two daughters, Deidre L. Gates, and Dawn M. and her husband Frederick P. Allen Jr.; two brothers, Harold C. Jr. and his wife M. Chris Gates, and Ralph E. and his wife Donna L. Gates; three sisters, Marjorie Nyberg, Virginia Iampietro, Elinor M. Tanguay; three grandchildren, Nicole B. Allen, Mariah E. Allen, Alixandria L. Gates; several nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Betsy Dunham. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 10th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St., Middleboro. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 11th at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Cemetery at the Green, Middleboro.
