Donald A. Oakley, 78 of East Bridgewater, passed away on Saturday, April 19, after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Lynne (Ridder) Oakley. He was born in Brockton, son of the late Clement F. and Marion (McDermott) Oakley. Don has been a lifelong resident of East Bridgewater and a graduate of East Bridgewater High School class of 1953. Donald served his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1953-1957, after that he got his Masters degree in teaching at the Bridgewater State College. He was employed as a history teacher at the East Bridgewater High School for over 20 years. Don also was the history department head. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening and trips to Myrtle Beach where, he and his wife spent their winters for 20 years. In addition to his wife of 56 years, Lynne, he is survived by his children, Peter Oakley and his wife Kathryn, David Oakley all of East Bridgewater and Karen Oakley and her partner Mary Baggao of Az; also many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Robert F. and Richard C. Oakley. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22, at 11 a.m. in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St. (Rte. 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Northville Cemetery, East Bridgewater, MA. Visitation omitted by request.
