John F. McEwan Obituary
John F. McEwan, Ed.D., 64, of Whitman, died May 15, 2013 after a five-year battle with melanoma. He was born in Brockton, a son the the late Leo and Catherine (Atton) McEwan. He earned many degrees: AA from Oblate College, BS from Stonehill College, M.Ed. In Guidance and C.A.G.S. in Educational Leadership, both from Bridgewater State College, and Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. As an educator, his work included English/Religion teacher and dept. head at Cardinal Spellman HS 1972-77, English Teacher, Asst Principal and Principal of Silver Lake Regional High School 1977-2000, Housemaster of Dover-Sherborn 2000-2001, Superintendent of Whitman-Hanson Regional School District 2001-2009 and President of Cardinal Spellman High School 2009-2013. He was a member of Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents; Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association; Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and China Exchange. He was awarded: Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents President's Award - 2009; Massachusetts Association of Guidance Counselors Administrator of the Year - 2009; Plymouth County Education Association Distinguished Service Award -2008-2009; Mass High School Principal of Year - 2000; Josten's Renaissance Hall of Fame - 1999 and Cardinal Spellman High School Leadership Award. Overall he was humbly proud of being part of the restructuring of Silver Lake Regional High School; being a National Speaker for Josten's Renaissance Program; the Design and Construction of the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School and being a leader in the Spiritual, Academic, Technology, Organizational and Facility Enhancements to Cardinal Spellman High School. His interests included theater, reading and writing. He enjoyed planning trips, traveling, family visits to Trapp Family Lodge, Walt Disney World and Hawaii, the National Parks, the Canadian Rockies, Europe including Italy, Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany, the Baltic Countries among others. He traveled to China in an educational exchange program and on another trip brought 74 people to China. John was the beloved husband of Margaret (Sperandio) McEwan for 40 years; loving father of Heather Mandosa (and her husband Frank) of Stoughton, Christopher McEwan (and his wife Elizabeth) of NC and Julie Swan (and her husband Gregory) of Foxboro; devoted Grampa of Zachary and Keira Mandosa, Maxwell and Trenton McEwan and Benjamin Swan; brother of James McEwan and Barbara McEwan both of Wareham, Edward Holmes of Canton, Wayne Holmes of NY and William Holmes of TX; cousin of Robert McEwan of Stoughton and many others. All are welcome to calling hours Tuesday 3 - 8 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Chapel, 850 North Main St., Brockton, his funeral Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from Waitt Funeral Home, funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Ghost in Whitman and burial at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
