Lena Barros Obituary
Lena (Gomes) Barros of Carver died peacefully on Sunday, September 9, 2018, with her daughter Barbara by her side, at Life Care Center of Plymouth, after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Ernest A. Barros; and was the loving mother of Barbara Waithe of Middleboro and her late husband Lawrence; and was predeceased by her son, Gordon W. Barros. She was Nana to her granddaughter, Lauren Waithe; cherished sister of Margaret Lopes of Fall River and the late Linda "Windie" Pires, Vasco, James Jr., Robert, LeRoy, Daniel and Joseph Gomes; aunt to Susan Royal, Cathy Desrosiers, Marlene Weston, Nelson Fontes, Robert Gomes Jr., Kevin Gomes, Richard Gomes, Matthew Mendes Jr., Mark Mendes, and Leroy Westgate; Godmother of Marie Fernandes, Manuel Britto and Raymond Pina. Also survived by many other family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her granddaughter who she loved spending all her time with. Born in Freetown, August 8, 1929, daughter of the late James Gomes Sr. and Elizabeth (Gomes) Gomes, she lived in Freetown and Fairhaven until she married in 1949. She lived in Carver from 1949 up until her death. Lena was a homemaker and took care of her two children. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, doing crossword puzzles, playing scrabble and family cookouts. She was a member of the St. John the Baptist Club and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Carver. A special thanks to all the staff of Life Care Center of Plymouth for the outstanding care given to Lena and to Cranberry Hospice. Visiting hours on Wednesday, September 12, from 4-7 p.m. in the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth (downtown). Funeral Mass on Thursday, September 13, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 130 Main St., Carver. Burial in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the St. John the Baptist, P.O. Box 115, Carver, MA 02330 or Our Lady of Lourdes, P.O. Box 68, Carver, MA 02330.
