Melvin E. Cushing, Command Sgt. MJR. Ret. United States Army Special Forces and a resident of Brockton, formerly of Stoughton, passed away in Brockton at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013. He was 85 years old and the beloved husband of over 60 years to the late Blanche I. Cushing who passed away on February 20, 2013. He is survived by his son Lt. Mark R. Cushing (MA DOC) of Brockton and longtime companion Esther C. Yim of Stoughton.

Born March 11, 1928 in Stoughton, Massachusetts he was a son to the late Robert and Sarah (Jennison) Cushing. He attended Stoughton Public Schools. Mr. Cushing was employed as a Contract Manager at Worcester Polytechnical Institute for over 20 years.
CSM Cushing proudly served his country for over 31 years in the United States Army during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was the proud recipient of 4 Purple Hearts , The Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, The Meritorious Services Medal, The Fourteenth Air Medal, 5 Army Commendation Medals, A Presidential Unit Citation, The Valorous Unit Award, 8 Good Conduct Medals, The National Defense Service Medal, The WWII Victory Medal and also 3 Combat Infantry Badge. He was also a dedicated member of the United States Army Honor Guard and retired Drill Instructor at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
Melvin was a member of the National Rifle Association, and area VFW's and American Legion's. He will be missed by all had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013 from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Sheehan, Lowe & Powers Funeral Home, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. His funeral service will be held on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Sheehan, Lowe & Powers Funeral Home, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. The Pastor Stanley W. Schultz Jr. officiating. All are welcome to attend. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. Flowers are welcome.
