Obituary Condolences

Lars H. Nylen, of Mansfield, formerly of Abington and East Bridgewater, died April 15, at the age of 93. He was the son of the late Mauritz and Asta (Norling) Nylen and attended public school in Abington. He joined the Army in 1938 and served for two years in the Panama Canal. In 1941 he volunteered as a paratrooper and served during World War II with the 504th Regiment of the 82nd. Airborne Division. He made combat jumps in Sicily, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He survived 422 days of combat and earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. After retiring from the military, he settled in Mansfield and lived there until being diagnosed with dementia in 2009. He was a caregiver who loved children and animals, gardening, bicycling and a close game of cribbage with a glass or two of Becks. He was the brother of the late Gustav, Karin and Helen Nylen and is survived by his brother, Per and sister-in-law Peg of Dorchester. Although not the oldest of his siblings, he was the "big brother" to them all. He was the much loved uncle of Ellen Nylen of Indianapolis, Susan Nylen and her husband Roberto Quesada Diaz of Malden, Carl G. Nylen and his wife Lisa of Ipswich, Peter Nylen and his wife Kerry of Portland, Oregon and Paul C. Nylen of Portland, Ore. He is also survived by seven great-nieces and nephews. From October 2011 until his death, Lars was a patient in the loving care of the nurses and staff of Unit 2 East at the Chelsea Soldiers Home. A funeral home service will be held at the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 35 Spring Street, East Bridgewater, Monday, April 21, at 11:30 a.m., followed by a burial at Central Cemetery, East Bridgewater.
