Rebecca G. Wood Obituary
Rebecca G. Wood, longtime resident of Middleboro, age 77 years, wife of the late Lorenzo Wood, died suddenly Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Born Nov. 3, 1936, in Cramerton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Ray and Verna (Knight) Gordon. Becky graduated from Lowell High School in N.C., where she played on the womens varsity basketball team. She attended Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., then moved to Washington, DC, in 1956. While in DC, she worked for the FBI and was a member of the Anacostia Methodist Church Youth Group, where she met Lorenzo Wood. She and Woody were married in DC on March 12, 1960, and moved to Middleborough later that same year. She worked for the Middleborough School System and the Massachusetts Department of Public Education. Through the years, Becky was an active volunteer for many community organizations including the YMCA, the 4-H, and the Middleborough Library. She was an avid genealogist and spent many years researching and documenting family history. Her Thanksgiving feasts will be fondly remembered by both family and friends. She is survived by her son, Lorenzo Wood VI of Middleborough; her daughter, Joy McCarrick and her husband Michael of Lee, N.H.; four grandchildren, Lorenzo Wood VII, Erica Wood, James McCarrick and Holly McCarrick; sister-in-law, Patience Bumstead of Courtney, B.C.; nieces and nephews, Carla Dempster of North Vancouver, B.C., Kelli Frey of Angier, N.C., Steven Andrews of Gastonia, N.C., and William Hicks Jr. of Lenoir, N.C. Visiting hours will be held at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St., Middleboro, Friday, June 13, from 4-8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Nemasket Hill Cemetery, Middleboro, Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Old Colony YMCA, 61 E. Grove St., Middleboro, MA or the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library (FMPL), 102 North Main St., Middleboro, MA 02346.
