Thomas Robert Hegg, 84, of Columbus, Ind., died at 8:12 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Four Seasons Retirement Center. Tom and his wife moved to Columbus, from Matthews, N.C. Tom was a decorated member of the 14th Infantry in Korea and participated in the battle of Heartbreak Ridge. A graduate of the UMass-Amherst, he was an industrial engineer at various companies for 40 years including at Eastman Kodak during the development of the camera used on the first Apollo moon landing. Born in Brockton, Mass., April 13, 1929, Tom was the son of the late Harry Hegg and Anna Johnson Hegg. Tom played center for the undefeated 1945 Oliver Ames High School football team, which was honored recently by the Easton Historical Society. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Gaiser Hegg; daughters, Sue Hegg of Charlotte, N.C., Linda Hegg of Wilmington, Del., Barbara Buchanan of Indianapolis, Ind., Barbara Witham, Coppell, Texas, and Rebecca Lorenz of Columbus, Ind.; sons, Thomas Robert (Jeanine) Hegg Jr. of Boston and John W. Hegg of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a brother, John Peter Hegg of Phoenix, Ariz.; and grandchildren, Maggie Buchanan, Patrick Buchanan, Sam Hegg, Giorgianna Auteri, Mateo Auteri, Tim Witham and Lean Witham. He was preceded by a daughter, Beth Lorenz; and brothers, Harry Hegg Jr. and Leroy Hegg. Private services. Arrangements were made by Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
