Bernardo L. Fernandes, age 87 years, of Lakeville died Feb. 26, 2013 at his home with his loved ones around him. He was the loving husband of Shirley J. (Gaskin) Fernandes of sixty years. Born and raised in Raynham, MA, he was the son of the late Casmiro and Mary (Correia) Fernandes. He was educated in Raynham and Taunton Schools and served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the Pacific as a T Sergeant with the 174th combat engineers from 1943 to 1946. He went in on the first wave and received the Philippine Liberation Medal. He was employed by the Winthrop-Atkins Company for 44 years as the Production Control Manager retiring on June 1, 1990. After retiring he enjoyed traveling with his wife Shirley. He was a member of the Lakeville United Church of Christ, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lakeville Historical Society, Sociables Club, Happy Hearts Club, Mens Breakfast Club, AARP and the Mexican Dominos Gang. In addition to his wife Shirley he is survived by a son Leonard Fernandes of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, 2 brothers Daniel Fernandes and his wife Irene and Joseph Fernandes and his wife Edna; 2 sisters Irene Connors and her husband John and Linda Brackett and her husband Edward and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Beatrice Gonsalves and Francisco Fernandes. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the Lakeville United Church of Christ, 1 Precinct St., Lakeville, MA 02347. Interment will follow in Central Cemetery in Middleboro. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 1, 2013 from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford St., Lakeville, MA 02347.
