Alton Al Edmund Flynn of Hanson, formerly of Holbrook, died June 8, 2013, at the age of 68, after a long and difficult illness. Beloved husband of Ena M. (Bell) Flynn, he was the loving father of Leslie ONeil of Kansas; dear son of the late Edmund Duffy Flynn and Evelyn Pompeo Flynn; devoted brother of Evelyn Mavilia of Holbrook, Kathy Flynn of Braintree and Marion Flynn of Illinois; dear grandfather of Daniel and Anna ONeil of Kansas; Godfather of Suzanne Bernier of Hanson. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins. Alton graduated from Holbrook High School, studied at Bryant and Stratton Business School. He served in the Army in Vietnam. He did not talk to his family about his service, but maintained a loyalty to those who served through a variety of volunteer activities, including indexing the writing of Vietnam era veterans and their spouses. After the service, he worked for Morse Shoe and Deerskin Trading Post as an accountant while finishing his undergraduate studies at Northeastern University. To fulfill a dream to teach, he received a master's degree in teaching from Bridgewater State University. He taught high school accounting in Cohasset and Braintree and then at Stoughton High School, he taught his love, American Studies and History. Many students credit him for lighting a spark for history that has enriched their lives. His colleagues were his good friends. He was also ahead of his time, running peer leadership groups at Stoughton High. Al had a lifelong love of all things automotive, and found peace in working on his immaculate cars. As an adult, he was very athletic, working out regularly or taking long bike rides with his friend Don Bernier of Hanson. He and Ena also loved visiting museums and traveling together, especially to the southwest and Maine. His family is grateful for his life and all he left here on earth, and will all miss him. Reposing at the Cartwright Funeral Home, 69 So. Franklin St., Holbrook, (Rte. 37), until 9:30 a.m. Thursday followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hour 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Burial at 2:15 p.m. in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Al was both of my daughter's favorite teacher, they both served as his assistants and took every history course that "Mr Flynn taught ". He was charming and kind. I chaperoned a few field trips with him and we had a lot of laughs. He was proud to learn of my daughter's successes after high school and attended a party we had a couple of years ago for my daughter. He was a true gentleman and an American Hero. His warm smile and caring manner will be missed very much by so many in the Stoughton community. Will miss you Al. Thank you for being such a great teacher and friend. May God hold you in His arms forever.

Ena, I will never forget one particular kindness AL showed to me. While you and I were out gallivanting one day, Al had washed my car!! He and I shared the love a clean and polished car. I remember that to this day and will never forget how touched I was by that. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I met Alton at the Summer Institute at the JFK Library. His love and knowledge of history and teaching was immediately apparent. I looked forward to the questions he asked or comments he made in response to the presentations. I am sorry to hear of his difficult illness but know that he is at peace.
