Richard Finn Burke, of Hingham, 88 years old died peacefully Tuesday, April 1, at home with his wife and six children by his side after a long illness. He was a devoted and loving husband of Claire (Norton) Burke for 59 years. Richard was the brother of the late Katherine Giblin and Right Rev. Msg. Joseph Burke. He was born on March 1, 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Richard enjoyed summers on Cape Cod with his family, sailing, golfing, and reading. He was an avid runner and proud to have achieved first place in his 80+ bracket in the July 4th Hingham road race. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. He espoused Christian principles his entire life and valued family above all. Richard was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He served valiantly in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean conflict. He attended Boston College High School, Kings Point and graduated from Boston College in 1950. He continued his education at Bentley University and Babson Graduate School. Richard was a financial controller for 28 years, an investment advisor and entrepreneur. Loving father of Richard Burke of Stratham, N.H., Kathy Wells of Hingham, Charles Burke of Hingham, John and his wife Tracey Burke of Duxbury, Mary Claire and her husband Brian Flaherty of Franklin, and Jay Burke and his wife Jennifer Burke of Norwell, and twelve loving grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at 10 a.m. in Resurrection of Our Lord Church, 157 Main St., Hingham. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, 23 High Street, Hingham. Although I only met Richard a short time ago when he participated in my class at the Hingham Senior Center, I could see what a kind, compassionate and friendly man he was. He was a joy to be with. So sorry for your loss.
