George Dunn Obituary

George Henry Dunn, 88, of South Portland, formerly of Kezar Falls, ME and Braintree, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013. Beloved son of Ruth Ann Dunham and Percival Henry Leroy Dunn. He graduated from Braintree High School, class of 1942 and then served in the United States Army during World War II. He attended Boston University where he studied business and was active on the debate and gymnastic teams. There he met and married his sweetheart, Glory Enid Goodwin. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. For many years he worked in the insurance field and eventually started his own insurance agency. After retirement, he worked for the York Cumberland Housing Authority. George, known as Hank or Henry by his family, grew up in Braintree back at a time when there were fields to roam, country roads to bicycle, and fishing spots to be explored. He loved nature and enjoyed many outdoor adventures, such as sailing, hiking, cycling and camping. He enjoyed building things like porches, sheds and stonewalls and also working in his apple orchard. Many a child was the recipient of a block of wood and a few nails along with a lesson on using tools. He was a hit with all of his grandchildren when he let them drive the tractor through the apple orchard. He considered his family his greatest accomplishment and joy. He is survived by his beloved wife Glory, and children Bonnie Kline of South Portland, ME, Ellen and Richard Pompeo of Plymouth, Judy and Gordon McConarty of Pembroke, Hank and Ellen Dunn of South Portland, ME, 8 grandchildren and their spouses, 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters Rosamond Murphy, Nancy Savastano, brothers David and Tom Dunn and families, all of MA. He was predeceased by his brother Sonny Dunn, grandson Robert Pompeo, son-in-law Daniel Kline, and nephew Douglas Goodwin. A celebration of his life will be held at Peoples United Methodist Church, 310 Broadway, South Portland, ME on Sunday, July 28 at 1 p.m. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of The Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Maine Veterans Home, 290 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074.
