Evelyn S. Power

Evelyn Shirley Power, age 91, of Norwell and Halifax passed away peacefully at home Sunday, May 19, 2013, after an April and May hospitalization for peritoneal carcinomatosis. She was born in Boston and was a 1938 graduate of the Jeremiah E. Burke High School. She then enrolled in postgraduate art classes for a few years, and ultimately produced dozens of paintings while pursuing her art hobby for more than 70 years. After briefly working in proofreading for a book publisher, she joined the World War II effort in the electrical engineering laboratory of Simplex Wire & Cable Co. of Cambridge, in support of the Army Signal Corps. After the war, she and her husband established residences in Monponsett (Halifax) and Norwell, maintaining both of these throughout their lives. She was a communicant of the two nearby churches, Our Lady of the Lake Church in Monponsett and Saint Helen Church in Norwell. In addition, she volunteered as an elementary-school CCD teacher in Norwell. Also, after the war, she occasionally pursued paid jobs, notably as a nursery-school teacher, but remained strongly focused on home and family. Her interests included vegetable and flower gardening, rowing, canoeing, and swimming. She swam in West Monponsett Pond for about 75 summers, and became a year-round indoor pool swimmer in her 70s and 80s. One other favorite exercise, up until age 87, was mowing her lawn. At age 91, she was still walking outside and washing her car, even though she had stopped driving the car herself a few years before that. One of her favorite accomplishments was coordinating the architectural design of a new pond-facing home, starting when she was age 74. At about the same time, she began her efforts at helping her husband through his 15 years as a cancer survivor. She loved to cook and was, for example, walking successfully in her kitchen while she created six dishes for St. Patrick's Day 2013. She was the wife of the late James E. Power Sr. of Monponsett and Norwell, for 69 years; and the mother of James E. Power Jr. of Chichester, N.H., Matthew H. Power of Norwell, and the late Thomas D. Power. In addition, she is survived by two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Donations in memory of Evelyn Shirley may be made to Disabled American Veterans, Attention: Gift Processing, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
