Thomas S. Gunning Jr.

Thomas S. Gunning, Jr., passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family on April 4, 2013. A lifelong Milton resident, he graduated from Bentley College and was an Army veteran of WW II. A retired Executive Director of The Building Trades Employers Assn. and The Northeast Roofing Contractors Assn., Mr. Gunning was also an 8-year Chairman & 39-year Board Member of Mt. Washington Bank. A founding member of Laborers & Carpenters Unions Training Funds, he was a Trustee of Multiple Building Trades Benefit Funds, a 40-year Milton Town Assessor & Town Meeting Member, a past President and founding member of Milton Residence for the Elderly, an Incorporator of Milton Hospital, past President & founding member of Milton Merchants, a supporter & actively involved in many Milton Youth Sports Programs, and an avid tennis player. Additionally, he was a late member of Wollaston Golf Club, The Neighborhood Club of Quincy, Hyannis Yacht Club, Wychmere Harbor Club and Milton Kiwanis Hall of Fame. Mr. Gunning was the recipient of The Boston Catholic Labor Guild Cushing-Gavin Award, The Peace Medal from State of Israel Bonds, The Construction Institutes Volpe-Egan award, The Northeast Roofing Contractors Assn. Clarence Carr Award and many other Industry recognitions. The beloved husband of Helen M. (Barrett) and the late Gracemarie A. (Walsh), he is survived by his devoted children & stepchildren; K. Jane Logue & her husband James, Thomas J. Gunning & his wife Rosemary, all of Norwell, Patricia A. McNulty & her husband Gerry of E. Weymouth, Carole A. Roberts of KY, Patricia M. Ceurvels of Hanover, Thomas G. Meehan of Norfolk, Elaine M. Branca of IL, Janet M. Fitzgerald of Hanover, Michael M. Meehan of Narragansett, RI and Brian J. Meehan of Quincy, his 31 cherished grandchildren & 12 great grandchildren and his brother-in-law Kay Gunning of Hingham. He was the brother of the late James F. Gunning. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agatha Church, Milton, Monday at 12 noon. Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave., Milton, Sun. 1 to 5 PM. Interment in Milton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to The Thomas S.
