Dorothy Louise (Geldart) Bannister, 93, of Sandwich, died March 9, 2013, at Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, N.H. Born in Elgin, New Brunswick, Canada, Oct. 21, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Worden and Rachel (Garland) Geldart. She was a registered nurse, graduating from the Moncton (NB) School of Nursing in 1941 and married to Eugene Bannister in 1946 until his passing in 1982. They had spent most of their married life in Quincy. Dorothy was a nurse at the former Boston City Hospital from 1947-1983; attaining the level of head nurse in OB/GYN. Upon her retirement, an award was established in her name for BCH nurses that exemplified commitment to outstanding patient care, as she had demonstrated throughout her career. Dorothy also had a strong commitment to her church first in Quincy and later in her retirement in Sandwich. She contributed in various roles from working on church suppers to church trustee. For many years, she was an ever present worker at the Swift United Methodist Church Activity Center. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Nancy Drew and husband Richard of West Yarmouth; her son, Alan Bannister and wife Karen Bannister of Peterborough, N.H.; her grandchildren, Charlaine Melly of Metheun, Kristen Allfrey of Hudson, N.H., Michael Bannister of Brookline and Richard Drew III of Dudley; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Benjamin Allfrey of Hudson, N.H., and Ryan Melly of Metheun; her brother, Harley Geldart of Sussex, New Brunswick; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hilyard and Kathleen Bannister of Elgin, New Brunswick, and Robert and Helen Chandler of Billerica; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, Reginald Geldart of Riverview, New Brunswick, and Conrad Geldart, of Elgin, New Brunswick, and her sisters, Hilda Smith and Marguerite Harvey, both of Moncton, New Brunswick. Viewing hours will be from 4-7 p.m. March 12, at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich. Private burial to be at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree, March 13, followed by a memorial service at Swift Memorial United Methodist Church Activity Center, Sagamore, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Swift Memorial United Methodist Church in Sagamore, MA, or to the charity of ones choice.
