James E. Sullivan Obituary
James Edward Sullivan, 64, gently passed on the morning of June 6, 2018 at his home in Mashpee, Massachusetts. James was the second of five children and was born in Berea, Illinois, to parents James W. and Rosalind Sullivan (nee Murphy). Jim left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He was a mentor and a friend to many. In 1976, he began his career as a substitute teacher and assistant football coach in his hometown of Scituate where he found his calling. For 35 years, Jim taught Advanced Placement English and History during the day, inspiring among his students an appreciation for the beauty found in nature, art, poetry, and most importantly one another. He spent his evenings as a head coach of football, wrestling, golf, and softball teams, always teaching his players how to be great both on and off the field. Between 1997 and 1999, his Norwell High School football team played in three consecutive Eastern Massachusetts Super Bowls, winning two in a row including an undefeated season in 1998. After retiring from Norwell in 2011, Jim joined the Mashpee High School football program as an assistant coach and was incredibly proud to have had a hand in three more Super Bowl wins between 2015 and 2017. As recognition of his many achievements, the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association inducted Jim to the Hall of Fame in 2016. For all of his accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field, Jim was proudest of his family. He enjoyed 40 years of love and devotion to his wife Kathleen (nee Ward) of Mashpee. He found joy in witnessing his oldest son Daniel and his wife Hannah of Easthampton Mass. raise their two sons, James and Lawrence. He delighted in collecting and cataloging his baseball cards with his youngest son Stephen of Brookline. A visitation will be held at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave., (Rte. 151), Mashpee on Monday, June 11, 2018 from 4 - 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, June 12, at Christ the King Church, 3 Jobs Fishing Rd., Mashpee at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
