John Joseph McGourty, 88, of Milton, Scituate, and Naples, FL, passed away on Nov. 18. His wife and four children feel very blessed that they were able to be at his side for his final days. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Kay and Mary, and brothers, Frank and Hughie. John leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Greta (Greer) McGourty, daughters Sharon Giampietro (Joe), Susan Braccio (Joe), sons John McGourty (Suzanne) and Eddie McGourty (Marcy). John is survived by fourteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister Rita Walsh, sister-in-law Marilyn McGourty and many loving nieces and nephews. John served honorably in the US Army during World War II where he was a member of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). After the war John continued his education at his beloved Boston College and went on to earn his Doctorate in education. John became a teacher and worked his entire career in the Boston school system. He was an Assistant Superintendent during the tumultuous years of desegregation. John was a man of many talents. He was a gifted athlete, he had a beautiful singing voice and he played the piano by ear. He loved to sail his sunfish at his summer home in Scituate, MA. Most of all John will be remembered for his sense of humor. He knew how to enjoy life and kept us all laughing. He was that rare man who possessed both an easy and comforting manner and a strong instinct towards what was right. To know him was to love him. John married the love of his life Greta Greer and their four children grew up in a home filled with love and close relationships that they will treasure forever. More than anything John loved his family and friends, all of whom will miss him greatly. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agatha Church, Milton, Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave., Milton, Friday, 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline.
