Mary Jane Letizia, of Rockland, died on February 17, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Devoted mother of Debora Pizzi and Albert Pizzi Jr., Renato Letizia Jr. and Paula Letizia. Loving sister of Joyce Knowlton. Proud grandmother to six grandchildren - Nadine Letizia, Olivia Christina, Sophia Bianca, Alexander Joseph, Christian Richard and Joshua William. Mary Jane was born in Concord, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Lawrence leavitt and Mary Etta Leavitt. Mary Jane had a 25 year civilian career with the Town of Rockland and 20 year military career with the U.S. Navy Reserves. Mary Jane started her career with the Town of Rockland as a receptionist for the Youth Commission in 1978 progressing to secretary to the Police Chief in 1981 and then to Head of Payroll with the School Department in 1986. In 1992, she was selected out of 40 candidates to become the Veterans Director for the Town of Rockland where she served until her retirement in 2003. Mary Jane joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1979 and served until 1999 when she retired with the rank Petty Officer First Class. In 1990, she was called to active duty in support of Operations Desert Shield and Storm and served one year attached to the Sealift Command. She was awarded several Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medals, Overseas Service Ribbons and National Defense Service Medals. Mary Jane earned a paralegal certificate from Bridgewater State College and completed two years of pre-law studies at the University of Massachusetts. She was active in the Rockland Kiwanis Club, Operation Goblin, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and many other community causes. Mary Jane served on the Rockland Fiscal Policy Committee, Cable Committee, Memorial Committee and 504 Steering Committee. From 2007 to the present, she has served as an elected Commissioner to the Rockland Housing Authority. For 10 years she was the burial agent for the Town of Rockland. She also served as a certified detention attendant for police departments throughout the south shore area. She spoke fluent Italian and conversational Spanish and traveled throughout Europe and the Middle East during her military career and during her retirement years. During her retirement years she enjoyed spending time with her friends, family and grandchildren. Her favorite summer activity was blueberry picking at Tree Berry Farm in Norwell, MA. She also enjoyed cooking Italian dishes for her family and friends. Mary Jane spent her retirement years continuing her advocacy for veterans and was an early supporter of the Brockton VA Womens Health Center. Throughout her life, sincerity and dedication highlighted her course in the U.S. Navy, in the community and in civilian employment. A memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 25th at 10:045 a.m. at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Friends may visit at the Downing Chapel prior to the service from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment to follow at the Mass.
