Mary M. Whitmore Obituary
Mary M. (Jennings) Whitmore, 96, of Plymouth, formerly of Braintree died July 31, 2012 at Emeritus House in Plymouth, surrounded by her family and cared for by Cranberry Hospice. She was born in Portland, ME, daughter of Irish immigrants Martin and Delia (Griffin) Jennings and was raised and educated there, graduating from Portland High School in 1934. During her high school years she was an outstanding member of the school basketball team earning the moniker The Flashy Forward which was attributed to her skills and desire to excel. She loved college basketball, instilled by her desire to watch Colby College where her son Richard coached for many years. She was also an overall sports fan enjoying baseball and football especially. Mary loved playing Bingo and was a regular participant at Sacred Heart in Weymouth and St. Bridgets in Abington. Her family fondly remembers her cooking and baking skills, to which she treated them regularly. Wife of the late Richard L. Whitmore; she is survived by her children, Richard L. Whitmore Jr. and his wife Mary Kay of Waterville, ME, Maureen A. Taylor and her husband Raymond of Phoenix, AZ and Martin F. Whitmore and his wife Kathleen of Plymouth. She was predeceased by a daughter Marilyn Whitmore. She was the sister of Frances Merrill of ME, Irene Bernier of PA, and William Jennings of ME and the late Edward, Thomas, Martin and Laughlin Jennings, as well as Catherine Westort. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The Whitmore family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate her life Aug. 3, 2012 at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St., Rockland from 5-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland, ME. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway S. Portland, ME 04106. The family would like to invite all to a reception at the Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland St., Portland, ME, after the interment.
