Merle "Swede" Newberg, age 65, of Pembroke, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at the Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital in Brockton. Formerly of Brockton, he was the son of the late Harland and Madelyn (Jackson) Newberg. He graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1966. Swede was a U.S. Army veteran; served in Vietnam 1969 -1971. He was Vice President of Campello Keith Oil Company in Brockton where he also sat on the Board of Directors. He worked for United Parcel Service from 1972-1985. Swede then worked for Butler Built Pavements and P.A. Landers Company, before retiring in 2005. He loved to travel, especially on cruises and was an avid fisherman and loved to tend his garden. He was the beloved husband of 35 years to Susan (Freer) Newberg. Swede is also survived by several nieces and a nephew. Visiting hours at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 7 Mattakeesett Street, (Rte. 14), Pembroke, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, from 4 - 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home, Pembroke, on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. Interment services will be private.
