Theodore J. Burba

Obituary Condolences

Theodore John Burba, age 65, died suddenly on July 27, 2010 while on his sailboat in Duxbury, MA. Born in Brockton, MA on October 24, 1944, he was the son of the late Theodore T. and Stella (Mickevich) Burba. Ted grew up on his father's farm in West Bridgewater and was a graduate of West Bridgewater High School. After high school, Ted married Nancy Ellen Amaral and lived for many years in Plymouth, MA. After their divorce he lived at various locations on the South Shore before moving to Danville, NH in 1988. For the past two years he lived aboard his sailboat 'Ursa' with his stalwart sailing companion Leuka the cat. Each of the past two winters he single-handedly sailed his 43' boat to Florida. At the time of his death he had returned to Massachusetts to spend time with his young grandsons on the same waters he worked as a fisherman. Ted worked in the construction, commercial fishing, and mechanic trades before retiring. He was an advocate of odd, and sometimes ill-advised, adventures, including rock-climbing, scuba diving, caving, hiking, running, motorcycling and travel too out-of-the-way spots in New England. Ever curious to try something for the first time, he always had a new hobby. His outlook on life was well described by the business card he passed out while sailing, it quoted Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Mr. Burba is survived by his two sons, Paul T. Burba and his wife Carol L. Gove of Temple, NH and Brian T. Burba and his wife Dana Hanson of Auburndale, MA., and also his daughter Suzy A. Burba of Hull, MA. He was the beloved brother of Mike Burba of Marlboro, MA and Ann Keeler of Plymouth. He was the cherished 'grampa' of Bruce and Theo Burba. A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Lahey Clinic, 41 Mall Road, Burlington, MA 01805. Arrangements by Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth, MA 02360. For the memorial guestbook see: www.cartmelfuneralhome.com.
