Eugene D. Smith Obituary
Eugene David "Gene" Smith, longtime resident of Hingham, passed quietly away July 25, 2014, at the age of 80, having lived a full and active life to the very end. Born in 1934, Gene was an avid horseman and New York State's Quarter Horse Champion rider for several years. He was most proud of receiving a reward by Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. He and his devoted wife, Jan, met in college and together moved to Germany during Gene's service in the U.S. Army. They then moved to Hingham in 1961, where they raised their family and were very active in our community. Gene worked in the printing business for Court Square Press in Boston and later as Real Estate Agent for Coldwell Banker in Hingham. For many years they had a fabric store in downtown Hingham, The Calico Cat. Gene was a devoted family man who loved to spend time with his many children and grandchildren the most. He was a commanding and thoughtful man who enjoyed meeting new people and was known for his love of cooking, gardening and many "projects". He will be sadly missed by all that were blessed to have known him. Gene is survived by his loving wife, Janet (Leonard) of 60 years, a former English and Drama teacher; his loving children, Heather Vaughan Smith and her wife Kate of Hingham, Janene Burke and her husband Bill of Hingham, Sydnee Holmes and her husband Scott of Scituate and David Smith of Minnesota. Gene will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Jessica Burke and her husband Amir Zeidani, Kelly Christino and her husband Joe, Ashley Hiehiapo and husband Pa, Brittany Blau and her husband Chris, Cassie Burke, Kristin Burke, and Gracie Vaughan Smith of Hingham; proud great-Grampie to Will Christino and Solate Hiehiapo. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Rose of New York. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 p.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), Hingham. Funeral service will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in First Trinitarion Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate. Burial in High Street Cemetery, Hingham. Gene loved his flowers and was known to "borrow" a few when he traveled. However, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cardiomyopathy Center at Tufts Medical Center, 800 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02111. See www.Keohane.com or call 1-800-Keohane for directions and online condolences.
