John E. McKay Obituary
John E. McKay, of Minneapolis, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013 at the age of 52. John was a committed father, successful entrepreneur and a competitive athlete. The youngest brother in a large family, John was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on the South side of Boston. His father, John Senior, was a pipe fitter for Local 537 and his mother Marie worked as a nurse at Quincy City Hospital. From a very young age, Johns passion for playing hockey continued throughout his life. A graduate of the Journalism program at Northeastern University, John began his career as a sports and business writer for the Patriot Ledger. After marrying Michelle Weydert in 1994, John applied his entrepreneurial skills to the successful launch of the Boston-based advertising firm McKay, Fried and Partners. While at the helm of his up and coming company, John and Michelle were blessed with two beautiful daughters: Kristen and Jennifer McKay. In 2000, the family relocated to Minnesota, where John became an executive at Allianz Life Insurance Company. In 2003, the McKay family nearly lost their youngest daughter, Jennifer, to meningococcal meningitis. Thanks to the intensive care provided at Childrens Hospital, and through the power of prayer, Jennifer made a miraculous recovery. John was recognized as an All American athlete in the USA Hockey League, ending his lifelong career as a right-winger on a championship team. In 2011, John started his last company, Marketing Mavericks, and the firm grew impressively under his leadership. He is survived by his Mother, Marie T. McKay of Harwich, MA; Daughters Kristen (16) and Jennifer (14) of New Richland, MN; Sisters Maureen (Ross) Ajemian of Duxbury, MA and Trish Neville of Hyannis Port, MA; and Brothers Dan (Jill) McKay of Centerville MA, and Robert (Marie C.) McKay of Harwich, MA. John was a man of deep faith. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Holy Trinity Church, 246 Rte. 28, Harwich, MA. Visitation for friends and family is from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. in the Parish Hall with funeral and entombment to follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, acknowledgments and donations can be sent to Marie T. McKay c/o Bob McKay, 417 Great Western Road, Harwich, MA 02645.
