George R. Ballard Obituary
George R. Ballard, 83 of Rockland died on July 21, 2014 at the Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center. He was born in Quincy son of the late Duel and Doris (Winters) Ballard. He was raised and educated in E. Weymouth and graduated from Thayer Academy in the Class of 1950 and later attended Keystone College in Pennsylvania. Mr. Ballard enlisted in the United States Army as served as a medic during the Korean War. He has resided with his family for over 58 years in a home built with his own hands. He was a part owner of Ballard and Ballard Development, a property management company on the South Shore. He loved woodworking and traveling throughout the United States. George was devoted to the Town of Rockland; he served on the Finance Committee for 11 years and was a Water Commissioner for twelve years as well. He was a member of the Board of Selectman for six years serving as chairman on several occasions. He was a vocal member of the Committee to Revive Town Government in 1972. George served as an Alumni Agent for Thayer Academy and volunteered his time as a Cub Master for Pack #3. Mr. Ballard was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Rockland and served as a Chairman of the Executive Board for the Holy Family Defenders Drum and Bugle Corps. He was recognized for his volunteer service as President of the Rockland Lions Club when they named him their Man of the Year in 1971 He is survived by his wife Lorraine T. (Frechette) Ballard and their children, Steven G. Ballard and his wife Laureen of E. Bridgewater, Joan M. Remmes-Foy and her husband Kevin of Stoughton, Gail A. McSweeney and her husband David of Pembroke and Glen W. Ballard and his wife Jerilyn of Hanson. He was the father of the late Sharon J. Ballard and the father-in-law of the late Robert Remmes, III. George was the brother of Duel Ballard of VT and the late Ward Ballard. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late Allyssa R. Ballard. The Ballard family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate Georgess life at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St., Rockland on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. in Old South Union Congregational Church in South Weymouth.
