SPARTANBURG, SC-- Mrs. Annie Rose Griffin Whitener, 95, formerly of 524 Seminole Drive, entered life on June 14, 1917 to the late Mr. James Elliott Griffin, Sr. and the late Mrs. Belle Tracy Griffin. The Lord blessed Mrs. Whitener to live a long fruitful life and she peacefully departed this life on Sunday evening, March 24, 2013 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.
Mrs. Whitener was married to the late CPL Hiram Coleman Whitener, Sr. for twelve years. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by all nine of her siblings, her son-in-law, Mr. Daniel Winn, Jr. and two grandchildren, Mrs. Marva L. Whitener Williams and Mr. Rodney J. Tanner.
Mrs. Whitener was a faithful and dedicated member of the Stephen Grove A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as a Deaconess, Mother of the church, president of the Senior Usher Board, Willing Workers Club, Senior Missionary, and a student in the adult Sunday School Class. She also used her talents in the Eutre Nouse Social Club, by playing the piano after taking lessons from the late Mrs. Addie B. McWhirter. She was a member of the Spartanburg Atchison Family Reunion Group.
Mrs. Whitener was a graduate of the Spartanburg County Training School; she attended Cecil's Business College.
As we remember the life of Mrs. Whitener, many will remember her from her place of employment. For 39 years she worked at the office of the late Dr. J.C. Bull and The Bull Clinic as a Nurse Midwife.
Mrs. Whitener leaves to cherish her loving memories: one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean W. Winn of Spartanburg, SC; one son, Mr. Hiram (Shirley Ann Tanner) Coleman, Jr. of Spartanburg, SC; a devoted daughter-in-law, Mrs. Wilhelmena Steen Lee of Spartanburg, SC; two grandsons reared in the home, Mr. Toney E. (Rosalind) Means of Fayetteville, GA, and Mr. Rodney E. Winn of the home; granddaughter, Mrs. Sherrell Ann Williams Wilkins of Spartanburg, SC; one niece reared in the home, Mrs. Dorothy Rice Moore of the home; two great grandchildren reared in the home, Ms. Darcel J. Williams and Mr. Carlos Whitener both of Spartanburg, SC; five additional great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean W. Winn of 511 Arkwright Drive, Spartanburg, SC.
