GULFPORT, FL-- Betty Jane Barrs (Montigney), 90, of Gulfport, died Monday, January 7, 2013, in St. Petersburg, FL. She was born on January 14, 1922, in New Orleans to Arthur and Dorothy (Schoenfeld) Montigney. She moved to Gulfport in 1925, and attended school at Gulfport Elementary, Disston Junior High and graduated from St. Pete High in 1939.
Betty married Merton Barrs on March 8, 1940, and they were married for 65 years until his passing in 2005. She was actively involved in the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, where she had been a member since 1936. She had served as Church treasurer since 1978 and had been a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Administrative Council and remained actively involved in the UMW Ruth Circle (formerly Mary). She participated in several community organizations, including many different roles with the Gulfport Elementary PTA (1947-1964), Disston PTA and the Bogie Band Boosters, foreign student exchange program, the Gulfport Lions Auxiliary, and spent 8 years working with the Guardian Ad Litem program, 6th Jud. Dist. Pin. Co.
She previously worked as a librarian at the Gulfport Public Library (1936-1940), a head cashier at Sears (St. Pete 1944-46), and retired from Office & Bank Supply after 20 years as its office manager. She loved sewing, knitting, counted cross stitch, reading, crossword puzzles, cooking, camping with the "Van Hookers" in North Carolina, their dogs, and, most of all, being with family and friends.
She gave to her family and friends many gifts, including the knowledge that she loved them and also by how a simple act of love and kindness can help someone in need. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Barrs, Spartanburg, SC, and Susan Duval, Brooksville; a son, Philip and wife Kathy Barrs, Gulfport; two brothers, Arthur and his late wife Helen Montigney, Greenwood, IN, and William and wife Barbara Renney, Parrish; five grandchildren, Lee Anne Duval and husband Mike Palmieri, North Haven, CT, Jason Duval, Brooksville, Justin and wife Ashley Duval, Coleman, OK, Marielle and husband Matt Westerman, St. Petersburg, and Meredith and husband Ryan Noel, Moorpark, CA; four great-grandchildren, Kai Barrs, Alison and Thomas Palmieri, and Ember Duval; nephews, Bruce and wife Lin Montigney, Greenwood, IN, Brian and wife Diana Montigney, Willmette, IL, Scott and wife Pam Renney, Evergreen, CO, and Todd and wife Daun Renney, Brandon; and nieces, Beth and husband Jim Walter, Oldsmar, and Leah and husband Fred Emery, Parrish.
A memorial service will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, 2728 53rd St. South on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church Memorial Foundation.
