Elizabeth (Betsy) Humphries
GAFFNEY, SC-- Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Askins Scarboro Humphries, 88, formerly of 427 S. Limestone Street, left family and friends to join her Savior on Saturday, September 7, 2013.
Born in Gaffney on November 20, 1924, to Allen W. and Elizabeth L. Allen Askins, she was educated in the public schools with her three sisters and brother, Nancy, Harriett, Ann and Allen Jr.
She was a woman of four careers: Wife and Mother; radio talk show personality; corporate officer for The Coca Cola Company; and prolific artist of local and regional subjects. She was a graduate of Gaffney High and believed in continuing education. She finished her college degree at Limestone College after age 40. She attended The Savannah School of Art, and taught business courses at technical schools. She was a former member of the Professional Secretaries Association and Personnel Director's Association of Spartanburg. Mrs. Humphries was a member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by one sibling, Ann Askins Thompson of Columbia; a son, M.D. Scarboro and wife, Ginny of Greenville; nieces, Beth Williams of Columbia, Sandy Couch and husband, Mark of Columbia, and Claire Moser and husband, Michael of Knoxville, TN. Mrs. Humphries was preceded in death by her husbands, Milton Scarboro and Ed Humphries.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Oakland Cemetery with Dr. M.B. Morrow Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the residence.
