Hilda C. Berry
PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY, SC-- Mrs. Hilda Collier Berry, widow of Rev. Roy Alton Berry, died Thursday, February 12, 2009 at The Oaks in Orangeburg, SC.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Sunday, February 15, 2009 at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen E. Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Berry was born August 29, 1910 in the Providence Community of Orangeburg County. Mrs. Berry was the only daughter of Olin S. Collier, Sr. and Simmie Whetsell Collier. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and sisters-in-law; Dennis O. Collier (Kathleen E.), Herbert W. Collier (Elizabeth R.) and Olin S. Collier, Jr. (Margaret J.); and a grandson, Paul R. Weathers.
She was graduated from Providence High School and from Lander College. She taught in South Carolina public school for 20 years, retiring from Von Kolnitz Middle School in Charleston County School District. After her husband's retirement from the ministry of the United Methodist Church, they made their home in the Providence Community where she lived until moving to Goose Creek, SC in 2004.
She is survived by two children, Ms. Virginia B. Dangerfield of Goose Creek, and Dr. Roy H. (Mary) Berry of Spartanburg, SC; three grandchildren, Mrs. Virginia W. Harden (H.C., III) of Canton, GA, Dr. Jeff Matthew Berry of Dallas, TX, and Miss Lindy Suzanne Berry of Charleston, SC; two great-grandchildren, Miss Cheney Harden and Mr. Wayne Weathers; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Saturday, February 15, 2009 at Avinger Funeral Home, Holly Hill, SC.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Providence United Methodist Church, C/O Mary Ann Shuler, 107 Westbelt Road, Holly Hill, SC 29059, or to the charity of one's choice.
