Mr. John Alfred Turner
CHESNEE, SC-- John Alfred Turner, 83, of 1612 Highway 11 West, Chesnee, SC, entered into his eternal home Saturday, March 30, 2013.
Born in Chesnee SC, on August 23, 1929, to the late Ms. Mamie Turner, he was married to the late Nora Teamer Turner for 48 years. Together they had one son, John Noel Turner (Pam) of Boiling Springs, SC.
Mr. Turner was a retired Brick Mason. He was a veteran of the United States Army
. He was a former member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Chesnee, SC from childhood. At Gethsemane he served in previous years as a treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Choir Member and Scout Leader for Troop 160. He most recently was a member of Friends in Christ United Methodist Church, Chesnee, SC where he previously served as a Trustee and Chairman of the Finance Committee.
Mr. Turner received the greatest joy by serving others while assisting multiple charities in reaching their financial goals. He received numerous recognitions and awards for his relentless fund- raising efforts. He also enjoyed singing and listening to spiritual songs and hymns.
Surviving in addition to his son, are one brother, Norman Turner of Chesnee SC; four sisters, Frances Turner of Hendersonville, NC, Alice Alston of Wellford, SC, Jerome Shank of Boiling Springs, NC, and Nettie Logan of Spindale, NC; dedicated family friend, Paul Tinsley, Spartanburg, SC; three grandchildren, Tierney (Onarae) Rice of Taylors, SC, Trey Booker and Deandra Turner of Boiling Springs, SC, two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Eddie and Freddie Gilmore; two sisters, Inena Camp and Geneva Dawkins; three brothers, Noel Turner, Robert Gaffney, and Roy Gaffney.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 5 from 6:00-8:00PM at Callaham-Hicks Funeral Home, Spartanburg, SC.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6 at 11AM at Friends in Christ United Methodist Church, 603 Fairfield St., Chesnee, SC with Rev. Harold Johnson presiding. Interment will follow at Lincoln Memorial, Drayton, SC.
