Mary Eubanks Poteat
SPARTANBURG, SC-- Mary Eubanks Poteat, 99, of 194 Bryant Road, died Friday, February 22, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional. Born December 13, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Ernest Eubanks and Estelle Mildred Husky Eubanks. She was the wife for 65 years to the late Furman H. Poteat.
Mrs. Poteat graduated from Gaffney High School in 1932 and worked for 37 years as secretary for Bobo Funeral Chapel, retiring in 1993. She was a member of Spartanburg First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for most of her adult life and was an active member of Young At Heart, Yesterday's Teens, WMU, and ROTO. Since 1982, she was a volunteer at Spartanburg Regional and in 2008, at age 94, received the American Red Cross Hospital Services' Volunteer of the Year Award. Mrs. Poteat also enjoyed baking and she was a lady of great compassion who loved people, never complained, and had a gentle nature.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Poteat, CRNA, of Spartanburg and a son, Dr. Robert Poteat of Chesnee; cousins, Shannon Eubanks (Jim), Jim Harlow (Kati), Phyllis Petty (Paul), Bill Page (Hilda), Ted Page (Sue), Ned Page (Jean), Ann Phillips (Grady), Colleen Martin, and Bud Page (Chick). In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by brothers, Paul D. Eubanks, Dewey Eubanks, and Earl H. Eubanks; sisters, Vera E. Page, Eunice E. Harlow, and Jessie E. Hudgins.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 24, in the church sanctuary of Spartanburg First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Don Wilton, Rev. Sal Barone, Rev. Bill Adams, and Mr. Al Clark. Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary prior to the service. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park officiated by Rev. Robert Morgan.
